About JEC-SPS,USM & HLWE
The Joint Ethics Committee On Clinical Studies of School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, USM – Hospital Lam Wah Ee (JEC-SPS,USM & HLWE) was established under the joint authority of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Hospital Lam Wah Ee, Penang. The committee is committed to help the research community in achieving the highest ethical standards during the course of conducting clinical research involving human subjects. There are a total of 16 members in the Ethics Committee. JEC-SPS,USM & HLWE meets to review protocols and proposals at least once every 6 months and the meeting frequency may increase depending on the number of protocols submitted for review.
JEC-SPS,USM & HLWE will review both investigator-initiated and company-sponsored trials conducted by researchers from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Hospital Lam Wah Ee, Penang. Upon request, it will also review clinical trials conducted by researchers from other institutions.
Objectives
The objectives of JEC-SPS,USM & HLWE are:

To ensure the rights, safety and well-being of human subjects involved in clinical trials are protected.

To ensure that the trials are conducted in compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki and Malaysia Good Clinical Practice Guidelines.

To ensure that the protocols are well-designed scientific trials and the trials are undertaken by qualified researchers.
